报告简介
A three-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) with two organic struts carrying supramolecular and mechanically-interlocked functionalities as building blocks was successfully synthesized. Intriguingly, the ratio of the two organic struts remains invariant in the two-fold interpenetrated cubic MOF crystal, despite a wide range of initial stoichiometries employed in the starting solution. Through Monte Carlo simulation, it is elucidated that the experimental finding corresponds to an aperiodic phase, which can be mathematically described by random tiling approach. The interplay between entropy and the weak non-covalent interactions associated with the two organic struts in the given framework topology leads to non-deterministic aperiodic structures corresponding to an ensemble of tilings with maximal entropy, in which the specific ratio of the two organic struts is the “typical look”. In both chemical and mathematical senses the proposed MOF structure is a unique case in which aperiodic random tiling patterns exist in a three-dimensional periodic crystalline framework.
